Açai bowls are all the rage right now, and with good reason! Açai berries are extremely nutritionally dense, loaded with anti-oxidants and have cancer fighting properties.
Fresh açai berries have a short shelf life and aren’t available outside of where they are grown in the Amazon region of Brazil. As an export, they are sold as a frozen fruit purée, dried powder or pressed juice.
Açai bowls are a great way to add lots of colorful fruits to your diet. Sprinkle on some crushed nuts, granola and shredded coconut and you have yourself a filling meal to power you through the day.
If you aren’t lucky enough to have a smoothie joint close to you that offers clean ingredient açai bowls, they are simple to make at home.
Ingredients:
1 frozen banana
1 cup frozen cherries
1 cup frozen or fresh blueberries
1 tsp açai berry powder*
2 cups of coconut milk or unsweetened nut milk
Juice from 1 lime
1 tbsp honey or maple syrup
*make sure the only ingredient is powdered açai berry and no other fillers.
Directions:
Place all ingredients in a high speed blender. You may need to use a blender plunger to help push the frozen fruit down.
Pour into a bowl and garnish with your favorite toppings. I would recommend any fruit, nuts, seeds, granola and coconut. However, you can be creative because the options are endless!
